The rumored update to Cydia that Chpwn was helping Saurik with has finally arrived. As iDevice Daily review, Cydia 1.0.3366-1 has been released to the public this evening (previous version was 1.0.3322-73).

One of the changes is the way in which Cydia handles queuing files has been changed and there is actually a “Continue Queuing” button below the list of changes to be made. Previously users had to select the “Cancel/Queue” button and then select “Continue Queueing” option which isn’t much more work, but was greatly slowed by the overall relatively slow performance of the application.

Another noticeable update is in the “Changes” section of the app. Before, if you installed a new item it would no longer appear in the list of changes, and would only show up at the top of the Changes page when there was an updated release to the package. Now, all packages remain in the Changes list, in the order they were added to your list (which can vary depending on how frequently you run Cydia) and will simply have the green check mark to the right of the name that was seen previously on the available updates for your installed packages. Unfortunately, I did not have any available updates for any of my apps and thus am unable to note if there are any changes to that part of Cydia.

The meat of the update however, is an incredible performance boost throughout the application. The first time running Cydia after installing the new version will take a bit to get fully loaded, which is understandable. Once that is finished, the user will almost immediately notice the boost in speed throughout the application. On my iPhone 4, the actions are almost instantaneous, and pages load in fractions of a second rather than having to sit through that dreaded loading wheel for a few moments each time you tap on an option. Those of you using older models that suffer a tremendously slow experience using Cydia will be blown away by speed boost. I toyed around with the new version on my mother’s 3GS and was amazed at how fast it was. It was marginally slower than on my iPhone 4, but still on an entirely different level than the Cydia of old.

Much thanks should be given to both Saurik and Chpwn, as well as countless others that contributed in other ways I am sure.
