Apple’s iPad has thus far been a one-user device. If an email sent to a developer from Apple’s Worldwide Developer Relations to be believed, though, a multi-user account feature for the iPad could be in development.

On Monday, AppleInsider reported that an anonymous developer received the following response from Apple after requesting for multi-user support for the iPad.

“After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering,” Apple said in the reply.

While that doesn’t immediately confirm a multi-user account feature will be available in the near future, it comes at a curious time. Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference 2012 (WWDC) is to take place next month on June 11 – 15. Apple is widely expected to unveil iOS 6 – the “future of iOS”.

The iPad has been publicly pitched as more of a shared device unlike the iPhone. Even so, it remains to be tied to one single user profile, which apparently wasn’t the case – a report published by the Wall Street Journal a few days before the first iPad’s introduction cited sources saying that Apple put in “significant resources” in order to make the iPad “intuitive to share.”

Instead, the original iPad launched without multiple user profiles. Some app makers have responded by adding support for multiple users.

But as CNET points out one major obstacle with introducing multiple user accounts would be the issue of storage.

The iPad has only ever sold in three storage configurations (16GB, 32GB and 64GB), and by adding a Retina Display on the third-generation model, some applications have ballooned in size. Apple’s also done things like increased the quality, and thus the size, of video content in iTunes. Add in multiple users with their own apps and content, and problems could arise — all things that could require workarounds before such a feature arrives.

Marco Arment - developer of Instapaper (via The Loop) takes the above reply with a pinch of salt. He says that the quoted reply is Apple’s standard go-to response for such suggestions.

But we hope that Apple brings the multi-user account functionality in iOS 6.

Adobe on Friday launched Creative Cloud, a service that allows users subscription-based access to the company’s media creation and editing tools, as well as two “touch apps” for iOS and the Muse HTML5 web tool.

The release comes less than a week after Adobe rolled out its Creative Suite 6 software lineup which includes new versions of Photoshop, InDesign, lllustrator, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Flash Professional and other products.

Officially announced alongside CS6 in April, Creative Cloud is a more affordable alternative to the expensive design, Web, video and digital imaging bundles offered to professionals. With a one-year $49.99 per month contract, customers have access to download and install all CS6 software as well as add-on Touch Apps like Photoshop Touch. Month-to-month subscriptions are also offered at a price of $74.99 per month, while owners of CS3, CS4, CS5 and CS5.5 get an introductory price of $29.99 per month. Education pricing is also available.

?Adobe Creative Cloud members receive full access to the entire portfolio of Creative Suite 6 tools, integration with our touch tools, file storage and sharing services and Web hosting ? everything they need to go from idea to finished work, at a breakthrough monthly subscription price,? said Senior Vice President of Adobe’s Digital Media Business David Wadhwani. ?Creative Cloud will allow our product teams to unleash a constant stream of innovation, releasing new features, apps and services as they are developed.?

The addition of two Touch Apps, which can be purchased separately for $9.99 each, bring the total of mobile-centric Adobe products to six and include Photoshop Touch, presentation app Debut, website prototyping app Proto, brainstorming app Collage, design app Ideas and color theme app Kuler. Of the six, Adobe Debut and Adobe Kuler are currently Android-Only, though iOS versions are in the pipeline.

Included Creative Cloud software. | Source: Adobe

Adobe’s HTML5 solution, Muse, was also released on Friday after spending nearly 9 months in an open public beta that saw over 700,000 downloads. The new website creation tool allows graphic designers not versed in code writing to build HTML pages using tools similar to those found in Adobe’s InDesign print layout software.

While Muse is included in Creative Cloud’s entry price, free-standing subscriptions to the website builder can be purchased for $14.99 per month on an annual contract or $24.99 month-to-month. Both versions include a limited amount of site hosting, though Adobe hasn’t released specifics regarding bandwidth or site size.

When asked to find the “best smartphone ever,” the Siri personal assistant software on the iPhone 4S will tell users to check out the competing Lumia 900 smartphone made by Nokia.

The issue, highlighted by The Next Web, stems from the fact that, when provided with the question, Siri returns results from WolframAlpha. Searching the same query, “What is the best smartphone ever?,” directly from the service’s website returns the same result.

The Nokia Lumia 900 4G from AT&T, with a cyan exterior, is recommended by WolframAlpha based on a total of just four user reviews, with an average score of 5 out of 5. The site offers an extensive list of details on the Windows Phone-based device, including its price, dimensions, features, and comparisons to other smartphones.

In fact, WolframAlpha’s full list of mobile phones ranked by customer review doesn’t include the iPhone. In addition to three Nokia Lumia handsets, the top 10 user-ranked phones listed includes the discontinued HP Touchpad ? which is a tablet, not a phone.

Apple’s lack of involvement in Siri’s search results also came to light last November, when the company was criticized for Siri’s inability to field requests regarding birth control and abortion clinics. A spokesperson for Apple said the omissions were “not intentional” after the ACLU took issue with the fact that Siri could answer questions about where to have sex or find a local escort service, but referred users seeking information about abortion to pregnancy crisis centers.

“Our customers want to use Siri to find out all types of information, and while it can find a lot, it doesn’t always find what you want,” Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said. “These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone, it simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better and we will in the coming weeks.”

Apple’s official website continues to advertise Siri as a “beta” service, and it is currently only available on the iPhone 4S.

Applications using the Dropbox development kit for iOS are no longer being rejected from the App Store by Apple after links to an external purchase option were removed.

Filip Radelic, developer of the Cambox application for iPhone, informed AppleInsider on Friday that his software was accepted into the App Store. The approval came after Dropbox modified its development kit with a temporary fix removing the “Make account” feature.

Dropbox also officially confirmed the changes made to its SDK in its developer forums. Brian Smith, who works on the iPhone and iPad versions of Dropbox, said the issue with Apple was resolved after “the worst game of telephone you’ve ever played.”

Using the new SDK, applications no longer offer an option to create an account with Dropbox. If a user attempts to use an application that relies on Dropbox and the official Dropbox application is not installed on their iOS device, the SDK will open a login view for the service directly within the third-party application, rather than opening the Safari Web browser.

The issue stemmed from the fact that Dropbox offers users the ability to purchase more cloud-based storage for their files. By linking to the Dropbox website to ask users to login, they could also follow a link to register for a Dropbox account and pay for additional storage if they so chose.

Apple’s official rules for App Store developers explicitly ban links to out-of-app purchases. That’s because transactions made through a browser can be used to bypass the App Store and cut Apple out of its 30 percent share of transactions.

The enforcement of that rule has affected some of the biggest names on the App Store, including Amazon, The Wall Street Journal, and Barnes & Noble. Their applications were updated to remove links to out-of-app purchases in order to remain available on the App Store.

With services like Dropbox or Amazon Kindle, users can still open a browser and make a transaction, like additional storage, that will be reflected in the official iOS application. But developers cannot allow users to make that purchase with a link from the iOS application without using Apple’s in-app purchase tool for developers, which gives Apple its 30 percent share.

Mike McCue, founder and CEO of Flipboard, credited Apple on Friday with creating a “revolution” with its iPad tablet and said the impact of that revolution is still being understood more than two years after the device reached the market.

Speaking at the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing on Friday, McCue encouraged entrepreneurs and mobile app developers to sometimes “ignore the data.” He challenged designers to consider emotion and “soul” rather than pure logic when building their products.

According to the executive, content for the PC Internet has been designed with an eye toward data, rather than beauty. He pointed to browser interfaces, Website navigation, and the current state of Web ads as clutter that makes online content less attractive than print publishing.

McCue pointed to Apple as having created an opportunity for publishers to bring design and aesthetics to the mobile Web, as the multi-touch capabilities of the iPad allow for the removal of much of the navigation controls.

“When Apple introduced the iPad, it really created a revolution. And we?re just now starting to realize how big that revolution is,” he said. “With an iPad, you can actually navigate through content in a beautiful way that feels a lot like print…This is what “Flipboard” is all about: enabling publishers to present their content this way on devices like the iPad and the iPhone.”

During his presentation, McCue also explained that Flipboard had targeted China for its first international expansion because it believed the country “will be the largest mobile internet market in the world.” The Chinese version of “Flipboard” launched last year with support for local social networking services like Sina Weibo and Ren Ren. The app had previously been disabled in the country last year because it allowed access to blocked sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Flipboard expects the number of Chinese downloads will soon exceed the number of U.S. downloads. The upcoming release of an Android version of the app should also help the company expand its install base in the country.

The iPad “revolution” has made the device Apple’s fastest-selling product. A total of 67 million iPads have been sold as of the end of March, with sales of 11.8 million units in the March quarter alone. The company released the third generation of its touchscreen tablet in March, adding a Retina Display and a quad-core graphics processor.

Computing giant Intel is once again looking to gain ground in the mobile device market currently dominated by low-power ARM-based processors, saying that it plans to ply its substantial faculties toward currying favor with major player Apple.

During Intel’s annual investor day on Thursday, CEO Paul Otellini outlined the company’s plan to leverage its multi-billion-dollar chip fabrication plants, thousands of developers and industry sway to catch up in the lucrative mobile device sector, reports Forbes.

?Our job is to ensure our silicon is so compelling, in terms of running the Mac better or being a better iPad device, that as they make those decisions they can?t ignore us,? Otellini said.

Mobile devices like Apple’s market-leading iPad are quickly devouring the PC market, which saw a nearly 6 percent drop in worldwide shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said in January that he expects the tablet market to one day outnumber PCs, and it seems that Intel tends to agree given its realigned efforts.

Currently, Apple relies on Intel processors to power its Mac line of computers following a switch away from IBM’s PowerPC platform in 2005. For its iDevice products, which far outsell Macs, the Cupertino-based tech monolith uses proprietary ARM-based chips fabricated by Samsung.

Intel has been noticeably absent from the mobile processor space, though the recent acquisition of wireless chip maker Infineon could give the Santa Clara-based company a leg-up in offering integrated mobile platform solutions. Since the purchase, Intel has shipped 500 million wireless chipsets. Also of note are the thousands of programmers employed by Intel who can help tune mobile device software to run efficiently on x86 processors. It was this army of software engineers that helped Apple abandon PowerPC.

Intel’s Atom “Medfield” chipset is bound for use Motorola and Lenovo smartphones.

Intel reportedly inked agreements to supply Motorola and Lenovo with Atom “Medfield” processors for use in upcoming products, and more OEMs are supposedly in line to implement the new chipsets. According to Co-Manager of Intel’s Mobile Communications Group Mike Bell, the new manufacturing process used to build the chips is superior to offerings from the competition.

?What the process technology does is gives us better performance, at better power at better size,? Bell said. ?We think this is a fundamental advantage that we have.?

While Apple’s newest A5 and A5X processor family is built on the 32nm and 45nm processes, respectively, Intel is developing a more efficient 22nm component slated for release in 2013. The firm expects to be building parts using a 14nm process by 2014.

Not surprisingly, Intel was said to have been interested in producing Apple’s A-series silicon last year in an attempt to marginalize Samsung’s share of the fabrication business.

<img alt="A5X width=" src="http://iphoneappstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/wpid-teardown-120315-1.jpg" height=600 800? 0?/>
Apple’s A5X chip found in the new iPad. | Source: iFixit

The two companies remain strange bedfellows as the chip maker provides parts for Mac computers while pushing its own competing Ultrabook thin-and-light platform. An upcoming MacBook refresh is expected to feature Intel’s “Ivy Bridge” chipset with new processors entering the Core i5 and Core i7 families. Rumors circulated earlier this year that said Apple was looking to use its own ARM processors in upcoming iterations of the MacBook, especially in power-critical applications like the thin-and-light MacBook Air, but those whispered promises have yet to materialize.

It remains to be seen what effects Intel’s renewed efforts in mobile will yield, though it is unlikely that Apple will turn away from its own mobile chip-making business which by some estimates could become the world’s largest by the end of 2012.

Designed to allow iPhone users to avoid unwanted costs due to a data consumption too high, DataMan Pro provides a series of details than those offered by other similar app. And, with the new update now available on the App Store, you can also know how much data are “consumed” by individual app installed on your device.

Initially, the function AppWatch simply listed all the app accessed the data connection for a certain period of time. A useful tool, but not yet complete. Now, with version 5.2, DataMan Pro also includes traffic data used by each individual app.

The user can then easily verify if the audio streaming app that uses consumes too much data, as consumption requires download a photo from Facebook and so on. The information is divided among the data traffic consumed in 3 g and that consumed in Wi-Fi. DataMan Pro allows you to view this information in two different time intervals: one chosen by the user manual (e.g. 8: 00 15: 00 every day) and automatic (day, week, month, etc).

Be careful though: the new air traffic control system data included in this release of DataMan requires converting all registries already stored in memory. This could cause problems if the registry log is kept over a month old, so it is advisable to delete before updating the app (perhaps before deleting the log, you can export them using the appropriate function integrated into DataMan Pro).

Remember that this application is available on the App Store at a price of 99 cents.

iTranslate is a fantastic application that immediately – let us say – works really well and takes in some aspects the graphics of Siri. What we can do with this app? Translate a speech spoken in dozens of different languages when we argue with a person who does not understand our language.

The operation is simple: start the application we find two buttons at the bottom that you can configure with the language you want to translate. Pressing the button must not only speak and translate the text in iTranslate second language selected. You can do the same then our interlocutor. In this way we will have an almost instantaneous translation of phrases spoken, not just solving a few problems when we talk to people of different languages.

In addition to this which is the primary function, the app also offers a dictionary of words with definition and the ability to copy/paste the text and share it with colleagues or friends. Unfortunately for running the app requires active internet connection via Wi-Fi.

This is the list of supported languages:

English (US), English (UK), English (Australia), Spanish (Spain), Spanish (United States), Spanish (Mexico), French (France), French (Canada), German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin (China), Mandarin (Taiwan), Cantonese, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian

iTranslate Voice works really well, thanks to a well-structured and speech recognition. It is, therefore, a real must have for all owners of an iPhone.

The app is available on the App Store at a price of 99 cents offer launch.
