Apple Goes Back to the Mac for Media Event

Apple has announced a media event for one week from today. Does the invite give a clue to what we can expect? It looks like they want to remind us that they make computers, too.

An invitation to the press from Apple went out today, inviting the media to the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, for an event October 20. That means everyone is wondering what Steve Jobs has to tell us this time. Since the invite shows a lion peeking out of the Apple logo, most speculation points to a new version of OS X for the Mac. All the recent operating systems have been named for jungle cats, so Lion would be a natural progression from the current Snow Leopard.

OK, that one’s pretty much a given, but what else does Uncle Steve have for us? Since the event is called “Back to the Mac,” we can probably expect upgrades to some Mac computers, notably the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. The ultra-thin, expensive-even-for-Apple Air hasn’t seen a real upgrade in two years, and rumor has it Apple may be unveiling an even lighter 11” model. Also expected is a new MacBook Pro, especially since some Apple resellers have been offering substantial savings on the current ones.

But since we all know how Steve Jobs loves to surprise us, could there be news about the iPad at this event? Like maybe a 7” model in time for Christmas? Probably not, but we can dream, can’t we?
